Abstrakt

DYNAMICS OF MACEDONIAN-TURKISH RELATIONS IN 1991-1995

The aim of this study is to explain how Macedonia achieved independence on September 8, 1991, after the collapse of Yugoslavia, and Turkey’s position towards this independency. Turkey was one of the few states supporting Macedonia in the first years of its independence. The main objective of this paper is to analyse and explain the dynamics of political and security relations between Macedonia and Turkey. The author decided to choose this topic because academic research explaining the role of Turkey in the process of gaining international recognition by Macedonia during its first period of existence is insufficient: both in Macedonia, and in Turkey. The author analyses through the prism of the most important problems that the young state faced: international recognition, inclusion in the international community, and security issues. The period examined in the article was crucial for the newly formed Macedonian state, which, due to Greek opposition, struggled with the problems outlined above. Turkey, on the other hand, appeared as Macedonia’s only regional ally during the period in question. The text also explains the reasons for Turkish involvement in the ‘Macedonian affair’, stemming from complicated Turkish-Greek relations.
