Abstrakt

Methodological naturalism advocates for scepticism towards incorporating elements into scientific explanations that are unfamiliar and incomprehensible to the current practice of science at any given historical moment. This stance challenges contem porary methodological practices in media studies, particularly in two areas: (1) the recognition of measurable social objects (e.g., media systems, social representations, public opinion), and (2) realism about meaning (e.g., concepts of encoding and decoding messages, transmission of meaning). In this paper, I propose adopting methodological naturalism to address these problematic elements within media studies theories. I explore three naturalism-inspired solutions: the epidemiological model, practice theory, and the narrative approach, which may provide valuable insights for media scholars.
