Lemkos and Jews were aware of their separateness and their existence beyond the boundaries of particular social structures. The presence of Jews in Lemkivshchyna became one of the reasons for the interactions between two cultures: in the neighborly, commercial, and social fields. Living within a small community, they had to exchange services: for instance, in Lemko villages, deliveries from Jewish women were received by midwives‑Lemko women. Also, as social groups, Jews and Lemkos were influenced by external factors and political pressures. During World War II, they experienced repressions, displacements, and were terrorized. In the face of danger, many neighborly bonds also turned into helping Jews.</p> ER -
