REIFICATION, EXCLUSION AND REPLACEMENT OF CARMEN MAURA AND PENELOPE CRUZ IN PEDRO ALMODÓVAR’S FILMOGRAPHY
This article explores the phenomenon of the objectification of actors and actresses in films, together with the reasons for their inclusion, exclusion and replacement. The study focuses on Pedro Almodovar’s filmography and the performances of Carmen Maura and Penelope Cruz. This analysis presents a methodology with its own analytical tools focused on the bibliographic review of the relationships between the three subjects: the director and the actresses, in addition to documentation about the creation of the selected films. Accordingly, the characters shown in the different films are analysed. Subsequently, all data are related and compared to detect similarities and differences in order to draw conclusions. The results show that Almodovar finds more personal affinity for Cruz, whom he also considers more versatile as per his idealisations intended to be present in his works. This, together with Almodovar’s control of the production department and the actress’ commercial potential, determines the choice of Cruz to the detriment of Maura, whose exclusion from the filmography becomes a conscious consequence.
