Abstract

BASQUE-CATALAN CULTURAL PARALLELS

In this article, we discuss several threads that show parallels in the relations between the Basques and the Catalans. Apart from sharing similar geographic and historical conditions, there are other significant similarities between the two nations, including the “new song” movement and mutual gestures of solidarity between artists and intellectuals during Francoism, efforts to protect language and media policies, promotion of the language through relay races, cycling races, and the popularity of football, traditional human tower building at festivals, poetry improvisation competitions, special Marian devotion, traditional celebration of the summer solstice, Pyrenean cuisine products, and the successes of the “New Kitchen.” Moreover, both nations share a red headgear that has acquired rebellious symbolism.
