Everyday Life during the Park Chung-hee’s Military Dictatorship in South Korea after the 1972 Yushin Constitution

Park Chung-hee seized power through a military coup on May 16, 1961, and in October 1972, proposed the Yushin Constitution to solidify the foundation of his lifelong dictatorship. Following this, a national referendum on constitutional amendments took place on the 21st of November in 1972, with a 92% approval, resulting in the Park Chung-hee’s constitutional amendment. This study aims to examine the process of amending the Yushin Constitution and explore the everyday life in South Korea under the dictatorship of Park Chunghee. Through this article, the author attempts to shed light on the often darkly portrayed life during that period, providing a more colorful perspective to the daily lives of individuals suppressed by the dictatorship.
