KOŚCIUSZKO AND JEFFERSON: HONOUR BETRAYED
This essay portrays the lifelong bond forged between Tadeusz Kościuszko and Thomas Jefferson during the Polish hero’s second trip to America in 1797–1798. It shows that while this friendship was ripening in Philadelphia, Kościuszko’s interest in the abolition of slavery grew as he saw a vibrant free black community emerging in the nation’s capital. From this extraordinary bond sealed between the two Friends of Liberty came the will that Kościuszko wrote on the eve of his departure from the United States in 1798 – a will making Jefferson both the executor of his American estate and the beneficiary of Kościuszko’s American assets, to be used to free Jefferson’s slaves at Monticello or others of his choice. The essay recounts how Jefferson, upon learning of Kościuszko’s death in 1817, refused to serve as the executor of Kościuszko’s will and abandoned the pledge to use the Pole’s assets to further the cause of abolition.

son of liberty. New York 1999, pp. 249–52.
