THE STANDARD OF “THE STAR”. SOME HISTORY ON THE OCCASION OF CONSERVATION

The Standard of Handicraft Youth “The Star” was produced in 1899, out of silken baize in two colours: white and red. On the white background of the face side an oilon-linen painting of the Częstochowa Madonna was sewn, while on the red surface of the obverse a satin embroidery representing the White Eagle, inscribed into a ten-limbed star can be seen. Thanks to the image of the Eagle – being the emblem of Poland – the standard of “The Star” was erected on the corps de gardes by the City Hall Tower on the Cracovian Main Square on the day of Kraków’s liberation on the 31st of October 1918. The standard, presented by the association to the Polish army, was subsequently found in the possession of the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków, first, since 1928, as a deposit, and since 1952 as property under the inventory number MHK 672/III. In recent years the standard of “The Star” underwent comprehensive conservation in the Conservation Workshop of the Museum. First and foremost the linen of the face and obverse side was doubled, the missing parts of the eagle embroidery and the Madonna painting were supplemented. A series of other works have been carried out to support and secure the exhibit, which subsequently was placed in a special showcase at the exhibition and made available to the visitors.
