Abstract

IDIOMS DESCRIBING THE EXPERIENCE OF SURPRISE EMOTIONS IN POLISH, RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH

The aim of this article is to analyse the conceptualisation of emotions of surprise reflected in Polish, Russian, and English idioms. The analysis shows that the idioms under consideration describe physiological, expressive, and behavioral symptoms of surprise. The author concludes that the analysed idioms show both similarities and differences in terms of describing the experience of surprise. The units of the Polish and Russian languages tend to describe the experiencer’s unconscious somatic reactions to surprising stimuli, while, in English, surprise is conceptualised as a force which is able to hit and knock someone down, and as a specific “entity” capable of catching someone unawares in a vulnerable or unprepared state.
