Abstract

GENESIS, NATURE AND POLITICAL SYMBOLISM OF THE DAY OF NATIONS, NATIONALITIES AND PEOPLES OF ETHIOPIA

The Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Day of Ethiopia is an annual celebration observed since 2006, aimed at honoring the country’s ethnic diversity and promoting the idea of peaceful coexistence among its people. Its character stems from the adoption of ethnofederalism as the state’s constitutional foundation in the 1990s. However, recent events demonstrate that ethnic-based violence remains one of the main threats to lasting peace in Ethiopia. Consequently, the impact of this holiday on the country’s situation appears to be limited. Nevertheless, an analysis of its celebrations and symbolism provides valuable insights for studying nation-building processes, modernization, and political anthropology in Ethiopia.
