POLITICAL POSITION OF GREEN PARTIES IN WESTERN EUROPE: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
Since the early 1980s electoral support for Green parties has increased significantly in many West European states and now they are a permanent participant in electoral competition. This raises questions as to whether this electoral support has been stable or fluent, in which countries it is the highest and why, and are Greens still a minor force in electoral competition as it was in the 1980s. To answer these questions the study analyzes Green parties in 12 Western European countries from 1980 until the end of 2019. The paper finds that the Greens have been “small” parties from the moment of their inception until now, i.e., that gain up to 15% of the vote in parliamentary elections, though there are marked differences across different countries as to their electoral results. Ecological parties are strongest in consociational democracies: in Austria, Belgium, Luxemburg and Switzerland they gain the best results. Despite their rather modest political support they have been almost continuously present in national parliaments.
