Abstract

MUSEUMISATION AND THE DECOLONISATION OF AFRICAN HERITAGE

The author focuses on the analysis of how African cultural heritage is presented in museums, with particular emphasis on its colonial context. She highlights the need to decolonize museum narratives through dialogue and cooperation with local communities. Using the framework of critical museology, the article examines how politics, institutional conditions, and curatorial decisions shape narratives of difficult pasts – especially those related to slavery and colonialism. Drawing on the examples of Portugal as well as museums located in Mauritius and Zanzibar, the author demonstrates how local historical and social contexts influence museum representations. Furthermore, she argues that contemporary museums should serve as spaces for dialogue and multi-perspective reflection on cultural heritage.
