NON-ACCIDENTAL ACCIDENTALITY OF A MUSEUM COLLECTION. 19TH CENTURY VISTAS OF THE VISTULA IN THE HISTORICAL MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF KRAKÓW COLLECTION

The article discusses the vistas of the Vistula from the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, found in the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków collection. The small collection, like many museum collections rather accidental, is nevertheless an interesting source for the iconography of the city, as well as constitutes a starting point for the tracing of the path of development of landscape painting. It testifies to the role, which in the national consciousness during the Partition was played by the Vistula – “the queen of Polish rivers”. The vistas of the Vistula were divided into three groups. The first of them constitute the close to the idealist no tions of the early 19th century, enlivened by Romantic spirit Biedermeier landscapes of Teodor Baltazar Stachowicz, Antoni Lange or Józef Brodowski. The second one is represented by realistic paintings from the middle of the century and documental vedute from its end by Stanisław Tondos, Erazm Rudolf Fabijański or Władysław Trelewski. The third group, testifying to the break-through happening in art of the 19th century, is represented by paintings by Aleksander Gierymski and Ludwik de Laveaux.
