Abstract

SPACES OF INTERVAL AND MULTICULTURALISM: THE STORIES OF FABIO MORÁBITO AND MATILDE SÁNCHEZ IN BERLIN

The Berlin stories written by Latin Americans since the end of the 20th century have become a genre in themselves, given the abundant number of productions that have been added over time until today. What is the particularity that drives it? What do Latin American writers read in that city? What strategies do they adopt to dialogue with their historical plot? Was the experience of the East and the Cold War, with those intervals and their contact zones, a mark reappropriated by these writings within their own tradition? This article presents some hypotheses for the joint approach of two Latin American stories written in Berlin: También Berlín se olvida, by Fabio Morábito, and Berlín ‘86, by Matilde Sánchez. The interval situation (Gruzinsky 2000) generated by the experience of the border and fall of the Wall allowed these authors to encounter very intimate issues of their own literature. That Berlin in the process of fading, but not yet completely; ghostly with respect to its past, and above all hybrid, notably multicultural, it was eloquent for several writers regarding the subjectivities of the end of the century, also perceived through absences, interruptions, and aimless spectralities. Writing becomes a space of anxiety and creation that the Berlin stage with its fragmented sensitivity enhances.
