In 2022, a decade passed since the death of Father Professor Piotr Lenartowicz SJ, an outstanding Kraków philosopher of nature and a physician specializing in neurophysiology. On this occasion, it is worth recalling his scientific achievements, published in a comprehensive collection of works Vivere et intelligere released in 2009 by WAM Publishing House to celebrate the 75th anniversary of his birth. This publication, consisting of over 800 pages, serves as an important source of knowledge on the philosophy of living nature. The editor of the collection, Dr. Jolanta Koszteyn, along with a biography written by Father Professor Roman Darowski SJ and an interview conducted by Dr. hab. Zbigniew Wróblewski, introduces the reader to the world of Piotr Lenartowicz’s thoughts and research. The works are divided into three chapters that relate to the philosopher’s main interests: the dynamics of living forms, paleobiology, and the issues of cognition. Lenartowicz conducted research in the spirit of objectivism and ontological pluralism, basing his discoveries on the Aristotelian- Thomistic method. His studies on the wholeness and totipotentiality of biological processes, as well as on the phenomenon of epigenesis, introduced a new dimension to the philosophy of living nature. Lenartowicz presented a modern approach to studying the dynamics of the development of living forms. In his work, he also addressed paleoanthropological topics, analyzing human evolution and the taxonomic status of australopithecines. Lenartowicz emphasized epistemology, treating it as the key to resolving philosophical controversies. His contributions are an important reference point for contemporary research in biology and philosophy. Lenartowicz’s works not only shed light on the problems of modern science but also inspire subsequent generations of researchers to seek deeper answers to fundamental questions about life.
