LIBERTARIAN SATAN? ON SOCIAL AND POLITICAL IDEAS IN AMERICAN SATANISM
The aim of this paper is to investigate and put in context the Satanism of the Church of Satan (and, to a much lesser degree, The Satanic Temple). Culture in general and ideas in particular play an important role in shaping religions. As is demonstrated throughout the paper, American libertarian and individualist thought is an important context in reading Satanic texts. This paper employed a sophisticated textual analysis of both better-known Satanic books and lesser-known later texts to refute the claim that American Satanism is fascist. Moreover and more importantly, it is revealed that, in general, LaVeyan Satanism is right-libertarian (whereas the ideology of The Satanic Temple is left-libertarian).
