GALICIAN UKRAINIANS IN INTERNMENT CAMP NO. I DĄBIE

This article discusses the issue of the detention of Ukrainians from Eastern Galicia in Internment Camp No. I Dąbie in 1918–1921. Opened as early as November 1918, until the summer of 1919 it was, in addition to the POW camp in Wadowice, the main place of detention for internees from Eastern Galicia. Most of foreign nationals and minority members that found themselves in Polish captivity passed through the camp. Among them were Galician Ukrainians. They appeared in the camp as early as November 1918, after which they were the main inmates of Dąbie for 13 months. They included both leading representatives of the Ukrainian intelligentsia and peasants – the entire cross--section of society was represented. Conditions in Dąbie were somewhat better than in other sites in Poland, so it was possible to carry out extensive cultural work, despite the often inadequate food rations. Ukrainians mostly left the camp in early January 1920, but a small group was also interned later, so the last of them left captivity in 1921.
