Abstract

PROCEEDINGS OF THE KRAKÓW KOŚCIUSZKO MOUND COMMITTEE FROM 17 APRIL 2021 TILL 4 APRIL 2022

The report covers Year No 2001 of the Committee’s uninterrupted care of Kościuszko Mound, which was also the second year of the three-year celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Mound and the Committee. Since the grave of and monument to Kościuszko was erected over three construction seasons between 1820 and 1823, the celebrations were planned for 2020–2023, with the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda. The coronavirus pandemic temporarily halted the implementation of our plans. However, in addition to the permanent care of the Mound, we managed to organise several anniversary events, including the nationwide conference “Kościuszko in Scouting” and the exhibition “Kościuszko Mound in Kraków 1820–2020”, opened on March 24, 2022, with numerous guests from Kraków and all over Poland. The papers delivered at the conference by scouts and scouting historians showed that Kościuszko’s personality and ideas have been guiding the scouting movement from its beginnings until today, influencing successive generations of Polish youth. And the exhibition shows the assemble of the Committee’s presidents, portraying its illustrious members including honorary ones, and numerous memorabilia and documents from over two centuries of work. Both the conference materials and the exhibition catalogue will be published. Our permanent exhibition “Kościuszko – the Hero Still Needed” and the mound itself are enjoying continued success, as evidenced by the steadily increasing attendance. We held courses for guides to the exhibition and the Mound, issuing certificates at the end. With funds granted by the  Social Committee for the Restoration of Kraków’s Monuments, we carried out the second stage of conservation work on the neo-Gothic chapel of Blessed Bronisława designed by Felix Księżarski; the brick exterior facade was restored. As a sign of solidarity with Ukraine, fighting against Russia’s aggression since February 24, 2022, we flew the flag of Ukraine on top of the Mound next to the Polish flag. In accordance with the principle of renewal of the Committee in each generation, it was strengthened by three young members invited to join our ranks.
