Abstract

POLISH CLINIC IN PARIS. MEDICAL ASSISTANCE FOR POLES STRANDED IN PARIS AFTER DECEMBER 13, 1981 (PERSONAL MEMORIES)

The author describes the circumstances in which the Polish Clinic in Paris was established, following the imposition of martial law in Poland by Wojciech Jaruzelski in December 1981. The Polish community in Paris organized assistance for Poles stranded in Paris, without contact with their homeland and family. As health problems soon emerged, Polish-speaking doctors in Paris, with the help of the Mayor of Paris (Jacques Chirac), organized the Polish Clinic in Paris, which opened on January 4, 1982, three weeks after the declaration of martial law. Eighteen French doctors worked at the clinic as volunteers. Several thousand consultations were provided to Polish patients over the course of two years.The clinic also had a supply of medications and technical support in the form of a radiology office and a laboratory of chemical pathology. Friendly French hospitals performed several emergency surgeries and provided obstetric services for the Polish patients. All medical assistance for Poles stranded in Paris was completely free of charge. The clinic finally terminated its activity in 1984.
