PLASTIC SURGERY OF THE FACIAL AREA AT THE UJAZDOWSKI CASTLE HOSPITAL IN WARSAW DURING WORLD WAR II
The origins of plastic surgery date back to the 2000 years BC. The first plastic surgeries were performed in ancient India. The beginning of the development of modern plastic surgery in Poland dates back to the end of the 19. and beginning of the 20. century. One of the precursors of this field of medicine in Poland was Dr. Stanisław Michałek-Grodzki. During World War II, he ran a plastic surgery department. Very precise works were performed in his department. Everything seems to indicate that he saved many wounded from permanent „disability”. The aim of the article is to find an answer to the question whether plastic surgeries were successfully performed in the maxillofacial region during World War II at the Ujazdowski Hospital. To confirm the hypothesis, 301 medical records of patients from Ward IV A were analyzed. The documents were left by Dr. Michałek-Grodzki and donated to the Museum of the History of Medicine of the Poznań Medical University by his close relative.
