Abstract

FROM THE ACTIVITIES OF THE KOŚCIUSZKO MOUND COMMITTEE, APRIL 5, 2023 TO APRIL 12, 2024

The article is an abbreviated report on the activities of the Kościuszko Mound Committee for the period from April 2023 to April 2024. This was the 204th year of the Committee’s existence, its conservation work on the Kościuszko Mound, and the cultivation of Kościuszko traditions. During the reporting period, we hosted a group of aborigines from the Ngarigo clan – the custodians of Mound Kościuszko in Australia, who gave a concert of their songs at the Mound. We hosted the US Army Lieutenant Colonel Travis Neudersten from a NATO post in Norway. Guests of the Committee traditionally included cadets from the Kościuszko Squadron at the Military Academy at West Point. Prof. Anthony J. Bajdek, our honorary member, arrived from the United States for the November 24, 2023 closing ceremony of the three-year celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Kościuszko Mound and Committee. Erin Nickerson, Consul General of the United States, also participated in the celebrations. In mid-October 2023, traditional oath-taking ceremonies of first grade students of four Tadeusz Kościuszko schools from Krakow, Krzeszowice and Zawiercie took place at the Mound. Three inspections of the Committee’s execution of the adaptive renovation of the bastion and curtain for the purposes of the Kościuszko Museum with a permanent exhibition: Kościuszko the Hero Still Needed – conducted by the Voivodship Marshal’s Office and the Commissioner from the European Union, the Social Committee for the Restoration of Kraków Monuments at the Department for the Revitalisation of Krakow Monuments and National Heritage of the Małopolska Voivodship Office – were successful, showing no irregularities.
Three books were published, including the Biographical Dictionary of the Kościuszko Mound Committee Members 1820–2020. The Committee’s collection was enriched through the purchase of engravings, one painting and 409 student badges from Tadeusz Kościuszko schools.
Finally, on April 12, 2024, at the General Assembly, Prof. Mieczysław Rokosz, resigning after thirty years as the Committee’s eleventh president, proposed some suggestions on the agenda of new Board, including in particular the desirability of creating a National Kościuszko Foundation, and addressed words of farewell to colleagues and Committee members.
