THE ST. JOSEPH BURIAL CHAPEL BELONGING TO THE CANONESSES OF THE PREMONSTRATENSIAN ORDER OF THE ZWIERZYNIEC CANONRY IN KRAKOW AT THE SALWATOR CEMETERY 1889–2020
The tomb of the Norbertine (Premonstratensian) nuns from the Salwator Cemetery is considered the most outstanding 19th-century work of funerary art in Krakow and one of the largest in Poland. It consists of the funeral chapel of St. Joseph and the catacombs located in its basement, where 110 people were buried in niches on five floors between 1889 and 2020. However, the remains of 108 people currently rest there – two were exhumed: a man who was buried there for some time and Sister Emilia Podoska, whose remains were exhumed on 22 June 1994 in connection with her ongoing beatification process. Of those resting in the catacombs, 105 are Norbertine nuns from the Zwierzyniec canonry, one is a Norbertine nun from the Imbramowice canonry, and two are lay people (a convent servant and a secularised former nun from the Zwierzyniec convent). There are 115 niches in the catacombs, 109 of which are marked with plaques and one with a tombstone; five niches have no markings.
