ON THE KEY CONCEPTS IN TRANSLATION STUDIES – TEXTS OF YESTERDAY AND TODAY
The concept of ‘text’ is one of the key terms of translation studies; however, it has been presented through the prism of simple definitions, with scholars of translation putting forward fairly obvious definitions, limited within linguistics. This is one of the reasons why today in the time of omnipresent multimodality the concept seems inadequate or certainly problematic. Meanwhile, a clear definition of the concept seems necessary for defining the object of study of translation studies and thus securing the autonomous status of the latter. The article is an attempt made to consolidate knowledge and ideas concerning the concept presented throughout the years. It also puts forward a definition of a text understood within the structuralist and semiotic perspectives founded on Yuri Lotman’s semiotics of culture and Charles Sanders Peirce’s universal categories.
