Abstract

CONSERVATION WORKS IN KRAKÓW IN 2021 CO-FINANCED FROM THE RESOURCES OF THE NATIONAL FUND FOR RESTORATION OF KRAKÓW MONUMENTS

The Citizens Committee for Restoration of Kraków Monuments (SKOZK) applied the goals and principles established in 1990 and invoking the tradition of its great Chairmen: Prof. Tadeusz Chrzanowski and Prof. Franciszek Ziejka. Since late 2020, the Committee has been With the amount of approx. PLN 30 million at its disposal, the committee implemented 132 tasks. At the Wawel Castle, works in the cathedral (initiating the research stage of the works in the burial chapel of King Jan Olbracht) and in the Royal Castle (the north wing basement) are at the forefront. In the historic centre, work was carried out in most of the religious complexes. Conservation work embraced the stone elements of the exterior facades in St. Mary’s Church; the Garden Chapel in St. Barbara’s Church; and continued adaptation of the basement as the National Pantheon in Sts. Peter and Paul’s Church. The exposition of the Rococo polychrome in the former refectory of the Piarist monastery was completed. In secular buildings, an important task was the conservation of painted decorations in the Society of Friends of Kraków History and Heritage townhouse at 12 St. John Street. In Kazimierz, a satellite of medieval Krakow, the conservation of the furnishings of the Corpus Christi Church continued. At the Pauline Church on the Rock, the late Baroque facade was conserved. In the Jewish Town, work was carried out on the New Cemetery and the Tempel Synagogue. Within the former suburbs, public architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries and religious complexes were under restoration; the Late Baroque painted decoration of the Loretto House at the Reformed-Franciscan Church was conserved. In Podgórze, a town founded in the late 18th century, further work was carried out on the parish church of St. Joseph, the two cemeteries and some houses. The most important projects on the outskirts of the city were: uncovering the late-Romanesque portal of the Premonstratensian Church in Zwierzyniec; works at the Cistercian monastery in Mogiła, linked, among other things, to the Museum of Cistercian History and Spirituality; continued conservation of the Baroque furnishings of the Benedictine Church in Tyniec; works at the Camaldolese Hermitage in Bielany; and conservation repairs and adaptations of the defensive works of the Austrian Fortress from the second half of the 19th century.
