Abstract

CONSERVATION WORK IN KRAKOW IN 2023 FINANCED BY THE NATIONAL FUND FOR THE RESTORATION OF KRAKOW MONUMENTS

The Social Committee for the Restoration of Kraków Monuments (SKOZK) operates in accordance with the principles set out in the landmark year of 1990. The selection of tasks is determined by an assessment of the conservation needs and historical values of individual buildings. In 2023, the Committee had over PLN 37 million at its disposal, 37 million coming from a grant by the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland. These funds work like a “magnet” on the beneficiaries of the Committee, who contributed a total of over PLN 41 million. 142 tasks were carried out at 102 sites (largely continuations).
At the Wawel Castle, the works included the Cathedral (the helmet of the Clock Tower) and the Royal Castle (conservation of the cellars). In the historic centre, the conservation of the western façade of St Mary’s Church is particularly important. In the centre, work has been carried out on almost all historic religious complexes and numerous secular buildings. In Kazimierz, the continued conservation of the decoration of the Corpus Christi parish church and work in the former Jewish Town are particularly noteworthy. Within the former suburbs, the conservation of the late-Romanesque remains of the Premonstratensian (Norbertine) Church in Zwierzyniec produced significant results. On the outskirts of the city, large-scale work was carried out on the Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec and the Cistercian Abbey in Mogiła, the Camaldolese Monastery in Bielany, and the defensive works of the Austrian fortress from the second half of the 19th century.
