THE NAME MARGARET, WHICH MEANS JADE: TRANSLATING CHRISTIANITY IN LIFE OF SAINT MARGARET’S TRANSLATION INTO NAHUATL.
This paper concerns as an yet unpublished primary source, The Life of Saint Margaret from the collection Santoral en Mexicano. Assuming it to be a translation of Voragine’s Legenda Aurea into the Nahuatl language, the author strives to analyze both linguistic and narrative strategies used by the translator. The translator’s actions are further contextualized within the framework of Christianization efforts in Mexico, in a case-study of this process.
