Abstract

CONSERVATION WORKS IN KRAKÓW IN 2018 CO-FINANCED FROM THE RESOURCES OF THE NATIONAL FUND FOR RESTORATION OF KRAKÓW MONUMENTS

As in the previous years, the activities were based on agenda shaped by the Committee since 1990. The sum of 30.3 million PLN was available; most of it (30 million) was a grant from the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland. Giving preference to beneficiaries declaring their own financial contribution, additional PLN 28 million was obtained. The undersigned believes that financing of some projects was too high (the buildings of the former city arsenal and the seat of “Sokół” consumed 23% of the funds). A number of projects were connected with restoring lost or faded values. Of greatest importance here is further work in the Wawel Cathedral: making the paintings in the nave legible, conservation of the royal sarcophagi and the 17th-century wall coverings of the chapter house. An important contribution to the research on the beginn- ings of the cathedral are the discoveries in the crypt of the Vasa chapel. In the historical centre, conservation of the Wit Stwosz (Veit Stoß) Altar and the work on the late Baroque interior of Scala Santa in the Piarist Church continued. In Kazimierz, the next stage of research and conservation of the Corpus Christi church decoration, as well as work on the remains of the medieval Skałka, looks most impressive. In the complex of the former Jewish Town, the works in the Remuh synagogue and both cemeteries were continued. Works continued in the vicinity of Inwalidów Square and Wielopole Street, highlighting the interwar achievements of the “Kraków school”. Another achievement is the concentration of funds allocated for the revitalisation of the former defensive works of Fortress Kraków. On the outskirts of the city further works were carried out in the Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec and Cistercian Abbey in Mogiła, and in the hermitages of the Camaldolese monks in Bielany. Works continued in the complex of the hospital garden city of Kobierzyn. The Committee supports the creation of museums in monasteries and churches. In the near future, it is expected that museums will be opened in Dominican and Cistercian monasteries, in the Church of the Holy Cross, and in the Orthodox Church on Szpitalna Street. No task can be undertaken without submitted applications. In some areas there is a shortage of them. The scope of work in Podgórze was too small, and there are concerns about houses that are falling into ruin.
