ON ATTENUATING EVALUATION UNDER TRANSLATION – BASED ON SELECTED FRAGMENTS OF THE POLISH TRANSLATIONS OF BOOKS BY RICHARD DAWKINS DEALING WITH BIBLICAL DISCOURSE
In two of his popular science books, The God Delusion and Outgrowing God, Richard Dawkins has presented a critique of biblical discourse, especially that of the Old Testament, as a source of morality for humanity in the 21st century. Fragments of that critique carry elements of evaluative meanings, which play a key role in the author’s argument. The present paper looks at how elements carrying such evaluative meanings are rendered in selected fragments of the Polish translations of the two books, entitled Bóg urojony and Wyrastając z Boga. A special focus of the study is on cases where negative evaluative elements are eliminated or downplayed in the Polish translations, thus locally softening the impact of the author’s critique.
