Abstract

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING IN PROFESSIONAL TRAINING OF TRANSLATORS – CASE STUDY

This article discusses a project carried out as part of the three-semester-long Translator on the Labor Market course forming part of the master’s degree program conducted at the Chair for Translation Studies at Jagiellonian University, which aims to develop two areas of translator competencies required by the European Master’s in Translation (EMT): interpersonal and personal competencies and service provision. During the first two semesters of classes, students learned about legal aspects at the translation market, the rules of doing business in Poland, and developed business and marketing competencies. The culmination point of the classes was a project involving creation of a website that the students could use after completing their studies as a “starter” site and a starting point in their translation careers. The author’s idea was that the first two semesters were an introduction to the realities of the translation market and running a translation business and, in the third semester, through the Project-Based Learning all the information acquired earlier was used in the project. The creation of a website also enabled the development of new competencies: technological and teamwork skills. The conclusions of this article point to the difficulties that can occur during the creation of the website, the possible application of this form of project in other philological and translation courses, the challenges faced by the instructor as a discrete coordinator of the project team, and the opinions of the students participating in the project discussed.
